Roberto Zucco is a play written by the French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès. It is loosely based on the notorious Italian serial killer Roberto Succo, who committed a series of murders in Italy and France in the late 1980s.
The play is divided into 10 scenes, each depicting a different encounter between Zucco and other characters – his family, lovers, victims, police officers, and others. Koltès presents Zucco as a complex and enigmatic figure, alternately charming, terrifying, and pitiable. The play explores themes of power, violence, desire, and identity, and raises questions about the nature of evil and the limits of human understanding.
Roberto Zucco was first performed in Paris in 1990, and has since become one of Koltès' most celebrated works. It has been staged all over the world, and has been the subject of numerous critical and scholarly studies.
